Having officially represented Portugal at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2023, this year the Fertile Futures project takes up residence at Sinal de Cordes Palace in Lisbon. Acting as an 'itinerant laboratory', the exhibition presents various models by young architects whose focus is a more sustainable tomorrow. Fertile Futures highlights the results of a multidisciplinary research project boasting five thought assemblies, an international summer seminar and two publications, bringing together work that addresses water resource management in Portugal.

The project concerns itself with seven different hydro-geographical areas: the Tâmega Basin, Douro International, Middle Tagus, Alqueva Reservoir, Mira River Irrigation Perimeter, Sete Cidades Lagoon and Madeira streams, all of which demonstrate humans’ impact on water resources.  In conjunction with specialists from various fields, seven architecture teams discuss, analyse and suggest innovative solutions for reversing the recent trend of overlapping and imposition of models, interests and ways of dealing with water sustainability.
