YAYOI KUSAMA

Yayoi Kusama has become a prominent cultural figure of the 21st century, thanks to her steadfast avant-garde vision. Throughout the last seventy years, she has refined her unique artistic style alongside a core life philosophy. Kusama's creations mesmerize audiences, offering glimpses into boundless space and contemplations on the natural cycles of renewal. "Yayoi Kusama: 1945 — Present" tells the tale of her life and artistic journey, emphasizing her quest for interconnectedness and profound existential inquiries that fuel her creative pursuits.

With approximately 160 artworks ranging from paintings and drawings to sculptures, installations, and archival pieces, this exhibition that opens on the 27th of march 2024 provides an in-depth exploration of Kusama's evolution. It spans from her early sketches during World War II to her latest immersive installations. Presented in a chronological and thematic manner, this retrospective guides visitors through the various phases of her career, touching upon themes like Infinity, Accumulation, Radical Connectivity, Biocosmic, Death, and Life Force.

Curated by Doryun Chong and Mika Yoshitake in collaboration with Isabella Tam, the exhibition was conceived and organized by M+ in Hong Kong, in partnership with the Serralves Foundation and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Its showcase at Serralves was supported and complemented by curator Filipa Loureiro and will be opened until the 29th of september 2024.
